Scenery Hill

A "pike town" located along the the National Road, Scenery Hill lies slightly northwest of Beallsville. Its historic district encompasses multiple properties along the pike and peripherally north and south. The district sits on a ridge with a commanding view of the rural countryside. Most of the remaining historic structures were constructed during boom periods between 1818-1853 and 1910-1930. Most reflect vernacular construction with Federal and Greek Revival influences. All building materials are present, frame, brick and stone. The dominant structure at the center of the district is the Century Hill (Hill's Tavern), a stone inn that has been in continuous operation since 1794. It was built by Stephen Hill, one of the operators of the first line of passenger stage coaches on the pike between Brownsville and Wheeling, W.Va. Among famous travelers who stopped there were Lafayette and Andrew Jackson. [pp.133, 181 POP]
