Acheson, Edward G. House

From 1890-95 this was home to Edward Goodrich Acheson, who at the age of 17 became the holder of a rock boring machine patent. He was born in Washington in 1856 and subsequently moved to New York where he met Thomas Edison who made him a draftsman at his Menlo Park laboratory. After various career moves, he returned to the U.S. and moved to Monongahela to build the town an electric system. During this period he conducted experiments that led to his invention of carborundum. With this he experienced large commercial success and by the time of his death in 1931 he held almost 70 patents centered on this discovery.
